Keyboarding should begin in 4th grade.

I believed that our students should begin learning keyboarding in the 4th grade, so that they are proficient and efficient typists by the end of 8th grade. Our students currently do not have an opportunity for formal, consistent keyboarding education until the 9th grade. By this point, they have been using computers in one capacity or another for their entire school-aged lives and most likely have assumed poor keyboarding skills that are difficult to unlearn.

I agree IF keyboarding is going to be taught by a CERTIFIED business teacher. Expecting some computer generated program to educate these students in proper keying technique is insulting to the teachers who are trained in teaching such courses.

I absolutely agree that keyboarding instruction should begin earlier in a child's education. It needs to be taught by a certified business education teacher and on a regular basis. Fifteen minutes a week is not sufficient instruction for mastering a psycho-motor skill. It's like learning to play the piano. You can't practice for 15 minutes a week and become a proficient pianist.
